Examples

The examples illustrate how DOT has been applied to advanced sensor and actuator devices and, in the case of AMD, to a machine for removing contaminants from mine waters.

DOT applied to Uncertainty

The example shows how Device Object Technology can be applied to one important concept of measurement: that of uncertainty estimation. Uncertainty indicates the quality of a measurement process: high uncertainty indicates low-quality measurement.

Channel Flow

For the measurement of flow in open channels, a combination of several technologies is used: critical flow hydraulics, water level measurement, DOT and uncertainty estimation. Of these, hydraulics is the principal technology.

Channel flow technologies have wide application:
  • monitoring flows in drainage systems
  • water recamation plant flows
  • monitoring of factory discharges
  • monitoring of the water environment

AMD
Acid Mine Drainage is the leakage of waters from disused mine workings into natural watercourses. These waters become acidic from sulphur oxides within the rock formation which in solution dissolve metal oxides that are present, typically oxides of iron and manganese. To prevent these from being deposited in streams and rivers, the waters are treated with an alkali to precipitate the metals which can be intercepted within lagoons at the mine site.

A pilot project using DOT (with logging objects), pH and flow-rate measurement, and using a Smart metering valve to regulate the feed of alkali . The entire system was designed for low power operation (20 mA at 24V). Future development will incorporate solar power, GSM communications and will have Internet access.
