Examples: Acid Mine Drainage
This project brings together a group of devices within a 'machine' for the remediation
of waters from mine workings. The system comprises:
- Metering Valve A motorised stainless steel ball valve with flow/angle characteristic
for regulation in 1% flow increments for the dosing of alkali into the mine water (pH of water ~4.0).
- Flow Meter A triangular profile weir (ISO 4360) with ultrasonic level measurement.
Flow rate of the mine water is computed. Typical flow rates 50 to 350 g/m.
- Mixing Chamber Located just downstream of the weir, to ensure thorough reaction
with the alkali.
- pH Sensor The sensor measures the pH of waters at exit from the mixing chamber.
- Control Module Regulates the valve to control the exit pH signal within limits
(9.8 to 10.2).
- Data Recorder To
log flow rate, pH and valve angle. these the primary variables of the
machine.
All devices have DOT interfaces to allow the control system to be set and the results
viewed using an Object Browser.
 AMD specific application software shows,
through DOT, the control options at various levels of sophistication.
These include graphics of the current day's operations to the means of
managing the control parameters.
